About us

QIG (1).jpg

QIG (Quant Investment Group) is WBSS's investment team. We give members hands-on experience across both fundamental and quant approaches to markets — from picking a first stock to building and running a live systematic strategy. Here's what we do:

QIG Academy is our beginner-friendly programme, covering the essentials of equity research, portfolio construction and investment strategy, and preparing members for the annual investment challenge, where teams manage portfolios across equities, ETFs and crypto and compete for internship opportunities. For those who want to go further, Quant Academy is our more technical track, covering systematic strategy design, backtesting and quantitative methods, built for members who want to move beyond discretionary investing and start building rules-based, data-driven strategies. In the Quant Paper Fund, members put that thinking into practice, designing, testing and running their own systematic strategies in a live paper-trading environment — real portfolio management experience, not just theory.

Beyond these programmes, our Weekly Market Updates keep members up to date on what's moving markets and why, and Women in Finance brings talks and events dedicated to supporting women looking to break into the industry.

Our Recent Projects

This year, QIG has been building out a Quant Paper Fund, where members design, backtest and run their own systematic trading strategies in a live paper-trading environment — moving beyond theory into real portfolio management. We're also developing our Women in Finance events by reaching out to speakers and industry contacts to run talks focused on helping women break into the finance industry. Alongside this, we run QIG Academy and Quant Academy to prepare members for the annual investment challenge, and produce weekly market updates to keep the wider society engaged with what's moving markets.

Interested in applying to the QIG department?

We're looking for recruits for the upcoming academic year. Join the team behind WBSS, apply now.

We're looking for a mix of people, not one fixed profile. For our more technical streams — Quant Academy and the Quant Paper Fund — we're after candidates with some quantitative or programming background (Python, statistics, an interest in systematic strategies), even if still developing. For QIG Academy, market updates and event organisation, an interest in financial markets and willingness to research and write is enough — no prior quant experience required. Across all roles, we value curiosity, reliability, and a genuine interest in markets over a perfect CV.
